Shinsuke Satō is Directing Hollywood Live-Action Film Adaptation of My Hero Academia Manga

Entertainment news sites Variety and Deadline reported on Friday that Shinsuke Satō (live-action Bleach, Alice in Borderland, Kingdom, Death Note Light up the NEW world, Gantz, I am a Hero) is directing Legendary's Hollywood live-action film adaptation of Kōhei Horikoshi My Hero Academia manga.


Legendary Entertainment's Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter are in charge of the project, while Shueisha's Rysuke Yoritomi is in charge of the manga's editor. In Japan, the film will be distributed by TOHO.

My Hero Academia Manga Hollywood Live-action adaptation

In July 2014, Horikoshi debuted the manga series in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. On August 4, the manga's 31st compiled book volume was released in Japan. In North America, Viz Media publishes the manga in English both digitally and in print. Shueisha's MANGA Plus service also digitally publishes the manga in English.

The first 13-episode season of the anime aired in April 2016. The second season, consisting of 25 episodes, premiered in April 2017, and the third season, consisting of 25 episodes, premiered in April 2018. In Japan, the fourth season premiered in October 2019 and lasted 25 episodes. In August 2020, a two-episode original video anime for the franchise aired in Japan, and the episodes were streamed on Funimation and Crunchyroll.

On March 27, the fifth season premiered in Japan. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll are streaming the anime with English subtitles. The season's English dub is available on Funimation. On May 8, the season premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block.

THE MOVIE MY HERO ACADEMIC: World Heroes' Mission, the third anime film in the My Hero Academia franchise, debuted last Friday and sold approximately 720,000 tickets, earning approximately 940 million yen (approximately US$8.51 million) from Friday to Monday (Monday was a national holiday in Japan).
