In July 2015, the first 13-episode Overlord television anime series premiered in Japan. Funimation streamed the anime series as it aired in Japan, and in November 2016, the company released the series with an English dub on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The second anime series aired from January to April of 2018. The second series was streamed live on Crunchyroll, and an English dub was available on Funimation. In July 2018, the third anime series debuted. Crunchyroll aired the anime live, and Funimation re-aired an English dub.

In 2010, Kugane Maruyama launched the original Overlord light novel series online, and in 2012, Kadokawa's Enterbrain imprint published the series in print with illustrations by so-bin. The novel series will be published in North America by Yen Press. Hugin Miyama and Satoshi Shio's manga adaptation will also be released by the company.

On March 12, Maruyama confirmed in the 14th compiled book volume of his original Overlord novel series that the series will conclude with the 17th volume.

The story of the franchise takes place in the year 2138, when virtual reality gaming is booming. One day, Yggdrasil, a popular online game, is quietly shut down. Momonga, the protagonist, chooses not to log out. Momonga is then transformed into a skeleton in order to become "the most powerful wizard." The world is changing, and non-player characters (NPCs) are starting to feel emotions. With no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga sets out to conquer the game's new world.
